I am pivoting this week to a simpler, informational blog, this week, and through the rest of the summer until Baby What's His Name comes along. I do very much enjoy researching and sharing information with you all as I discover new and old hymns. But summer is also a time for different rhythms. I do plan for my full infodumps to resume in the fall, however 😂
Our first hymn is a “new text/old tune” by Carl Daw:
We will follow that by singing 73 There is a Wideness in God's Mercy, and a personal favorite, 619 How Can I Keep from Singing. I may add a favorite stanza, not found in our hymnal, that comes through the folk/protest tradition (you can read more here):
When tyrants tremble, sick with fear,
And hear their death-knell ringing,
When friends [Friends] rejoice both far and near,
How can I keep from singing?
In prison cell and dungeon vile,
Our thoughts to them go winging;
When friends by shame are undefiled,
How can I keep from singing?
If you’ve never heard an expository sermon on a hymn (rather than scripture), you should hear the words Kim preached at my ordination on this hymn, including that stanza. She begins around 48:30 in:

Keep singing on, my friends.

A few things to listen to. First a charming performance of the tune KINGSFOLD, on ukelele.
And an iconic performance of How Can I Keep from Singing by Pete Seeger:
